Mad Scientists!

Team 8 have been learning about reversible and irreversible change.

Here is a snapshot of some of the experiments we did in class this Term.

Mrs Turner made us a frozen hand-man. He was pretty cool. We learned that the heat from our hands was causing the frozen water inside him to melt. This was a reversible change because we can keep changing water into any of it's states (Liquid, Solid and Gas) by heating it or cooling it.

Then we made gloop (just for fun) this was REALLY hard to determine if it was a solid or liquid... It would fall through your hands like liquid but when you pressed it with your finger it felt like a solid!

We also had a go at turning Chocolate into a liquid. I guess we could have changed this back into a solid, but it was WAY more fun to eat it!!!! he he

Throughout the Term we have also made a rocket canister, tested Jelly AND exploded some glad bags. Science is sooooo much fun! Why don't you try some experiences over the holidays and leave us a comment about how it went.

Diwali Festivities with Team 8 and Room 11

Scooter Safety

Today, Team 8 learned how to scooter safely with Andy. We learned that there are 2 very important things we need to wear when we are riding a scooter.

1. A helmet (that fits)

2. Shoes

You know your helmet is put on correctly when you remember the rule 2, 4, 1.

2 - you have to have only a 2 finger space between your eyebrows and the start of your helmet

4 - there should be 4 straps around your ears

1 - only 1 finger should fit between your chin and the strap of your helmet

Parents - there were some Team 8 members who were still to grow into their helmets (and some who had already grown out), perhaps you could let Santa know?

Ambury Farm Fun!

What a great day we had at Ambury Farm on Tuesday.

We saw so many animals and learnt so much about each of the animals that.

At the moment we are making fact pages in our class to share all the amazing pieces of information that we learnt. Did you see them in our Publishing Books?

Clean Teeth

On Thursday morning, Mrs Turner found a whole box of toothbrushes in the cupboard. She thought long and hard about what to do with them, and then came up with the brilliant plan of teaching Team 8 how to brush their teeth properly! 

Did you know that adults should be helping us to brush until we are 8 or 9 years old? and that it should take about 2minutes to do it properly?

We watched this video to get us warmed up:

And then it was our turn to give our new toothbrushes a go...

Shake-Out

Here is a photo of Team 8 children participating in the New Zealand Shakeout - a national earthquake drill.  We practised two safety strategies - one to curl up like a turtle with our hands protecting our heads for if we are outside and there is no immediate cover. Secondly, to find a close by table to drop, cover and hold.  Our children did a fantastic job. It might also be a good opportunity to talk at home with your children what they should do at home in the unfortunate event of a fire or earthquake.

Fractions

For the last few weeks of Term 3, Team 8 were learning about fractions.

We learned that fractions are part of a whole. We also learned that all parts MUST be equal.

THE DROP!

Science in van and the Spikey Mat

On Tuesday we were lucky enough to have Science in a Van come and share their amazing science knowledge with us.

Team 8 learnt about FRICTION and also about PUSH and PULL FORCE. Ask team 8 about it and we can tell you what we learnt.

Here are some of the photos to show the fun we had.

As you can see Miss Fullard had to sit on a chair of NAILS!!!!!  Ouch!!!  Miss Fullard did not want to sit on it, but was very brave and decided to give it a go. 

Team 8 wanted to know what it felt like. Lucky Mrs Clyde had a spiky mat that we could use to try it out.

We talked a lot and did lots of discussion about what it might feel like. Then a few of us decided to give it a go. Aamniah got to try it out first because it was her birthday!!!

More awesome Maths

We LOVE Maths in Team 8, so every week is like Maths Week in Team 8!

On Fridays at the moment we are learning how to measure length.

The first thing we did was make wiggly worms out of playdough... Check out this video where we use measurement language such as "longer than, shorter than" to describe our worms.

We got even more tricky the week after, measuring how 'tall' or 'wide' objects were by counting blocks. It was pretty cool comparing objects in the classroom!

The week after that, we measured using our very own feet! (Have you been in our classroom lately? -you can see the display on our wall).

THEN... because we are measurement SUPER STARS, we got to teach Room 11! We made some miss-matched skeletons by measuring parts of our body with paper. We used standard (cm's) and non-standard (blocks) units of measure. 

We truely are amazing at learning here in Team 8!

100 DAYS!!!!

Team 8 have been counting all the days that we have been in school...and guess what we made it to 100 today!

So to celebrate 100 days of learning and 100 days of being smarter we thought it would be great to have a party. 

Team 8 were so lucky. 

We got to participate, collaborate, make, build, eat and colour in lots of exciting activities based around 100.

 Here is a little clip to show all the fun we had.

MATARIKI DANCE

We have been learning about the Matariki Stars and how Maori celebrate Matariki.
Matariki is the celebration of the Maori New Year. People celebrate by eating Maori Kai (food)

They also celebrate with dance.

Team 8 made up Maori actions to a Matariki song.

The song was about the seven Matariki stars. Very creative Team 8.

Zoe was so creative and clever at home. She worked with her mum to put together this amazing Matariki piece of art.  Here she is talking about her Art piece.

Impromptu Dance for Art's Week

Well, what else is there to do when Assembly finishes early?

Check out the awesome dance moves the Team 8 hip-hop crew created to Michael Jackson (Yes, they picked the music too!).

I think some of them may have been watching dancing with the stars... Very inspired! :-)

Cupcake Mad

It's no secret that Mrs Grant and Mrs Turner LOVE cupcakes... SOOOOO why not do a whole week of them?

On Monday Team 8 made cupcakes, on Tuesday and Wednesday we created art and stories about them. On Thursday we designed new flavours and made movies about them!

Here are some of the movies we made about our cupcake designs. I wish they were real so I could eat them up! What about you?

Tuesday - Arts Week

Can you believe what we got to do on Tuesday of Arts Week.

Drama and Visual Arts... Team 8 could get used to this sort of learning.

Mrs Grant got us to use some great Drama techniques called Freeze Frame, mirroring and role play.

We listened to the story "Funny Bones" by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. It is about 3 skeletons, one is a dog skeleton. They try to find someone to scare at night time.  The skeletons can't find anyone to scare so they end up scaring each other.

Here we are testing out our dramatic skills...what drama kings and queens we are!!!  (Haha)

After all that excitement we went to see Mrs Burge to Learn how to make Aboriginal Dot art. Here we are getting our hands into the paint and creating out masterpieces.
