Mad Scientists!

Team 8 have been learning about reversible and irreversible change.

Here is a snapshot of some of the experiments we did in class this Term.

Mrs Turner made us a frozen hand-man. He was pretty cool. We learned that the heat from our hands was causing the frozen water inside him to melt. This was a reversible change because we can keep changing water into any of it's states (Liquid, Solid and Gas) by heating it or cooling it.

Then we made gloop (just for fun) this was REALLY hard to determine if it was a solid or liquid... It would fall through your hands like liquid but when you pressed it with your finger it felt like a solid!

We also had a go at turning Chocolate into a liquid. I guess we could have changed this back into a solid, but it was WAY more fun to eat it!!!! he he

Throughout the Term we have also made a rocket canister, tested Jelly AND exploded some glad bags. Science is sooooo much fun! Why don't you try some experiences over the holidays and leave us a comment about how it went.

Mathematics in Action

You might be inclined to think that we are are on the 'wind-down' till the end of Term, in-fact here in Team 8 it is quite the opposite! We are trying to cram in as much learning as we possibly can before we say goodbye.

In Mathematics we have been learning about Mass. We have been using words like 'heavier than' and 'lighter than'.

Here is a picture of one of the balance scales we made. 

It was really fun to see what sorts of things we could pile on to make the scales balance.

We had a go at making playdough shapes too. We learned that even if we changed the shape of the playdough, its mass (or weight) stayed the same.

Maybe you could try to make a balance scale at home over the holidays. We'd love to see what things balance from your house!

Scooter Safety

Today, Team 8 learned how to scooter safely with Andy. We learned that there are 2 very important things we need to wear when we are riding a scooter.

1. A helmet (that fits)

2. Shoes

You know your helmet is put on correctly when you remember the rule 2, 4, 1.

2 - you have to have only a 2 finger space between your eyebrows and the start of your helmet

4 - there should be 4 straps around your ears

1 - only 1 finger should fit between your chin and the strap of your helmet

Parents - there were some Team 8 members who were still to grow into their helmets (and some who had already grown out), perhaps you could let Santa know?

On Tuesday we were lucky enough to have Science in a Van come and share their amazing science knowledge with us.

Team 8 learnt about FRICTION and also about PUSH and PULL FORCE. Ask team 8 about it and we can tell you what we learnt.

As you can see Miss Fullard had to sit on a chair of NAILS!!!!!  Ouch!!!  Miss Fullard did not want to sit on it, but was very brave and decided to give it a go. 

Team 8 wanted to know what it felt like. Lucky Mrs Clyde had a spiky mat that we could use to try it out.

We talked a lot and did lots of discussion about what it might feel like. Then a few of us decided to give it a go. Aamniah got to try it out first because it was her birthday!!!

More awesome Maths

We LOVE Maths in Team 8, so every week is like Maths Week in Team 8!

On Fridays at the moment we are learning how to measure length.

The first thing we did was make wiggly worms out of playdough... Check out this video where we use measurement language such as "longer than, shorter than" to describe our worms.

We got even more tricky the week after, measuring how 'tall' or 'wide' objects were by counting blocks. It was pretty cool comparing objects in the classroom!

The week after that, we measured using our very own feet! (Have you been in our classroom lately? -you can see the display on our wall).

THEN... because we are measurement SUPER STARS, we got to teach Room 11! We made some miss-matched skeletons by measuring parts of our body with paper. We used standard (cm's) and non-standard (blocks) units of measure. 

We truely are amazing at learning here in Team 8!

Maths Week - Counting Lollies!

Mrs Madden gave the school a challenge to see who could guess the correct amount of lollies in the three jars below.

Team 8 went and looked and then we had a discussion about how we could work it out.

Everyone had a different idea and everyone wanted to guess... BUT, Mrs Madden said we could only put in one guess per class.

What we did know is that we have to work out what jar A+ B + C =

Here are our guesstimates

After much discussion around how we could make one fair guess one clever person  said...could we add them together and do something with the numbers??

So after Mrs Grant helped a little, here are all the numbers added together then doing something special called division.

So our final decision was let's put in 272 lollies as the total.

Mrs Grant wasn't at assembly last Friday, so doesn't know how many lollies there were in the jars or Who got to eat the lollies.

100 DAYS!!!!

Team 8 have been counting all the days that we have been in school...and guess what we made it to 100 today!

So to celebrate 100 days of learning and 100 days of being smarter we thought it would be great to have a party. 

Team 8 were so lucky. 

We got to participate, collaborate, make, build, eat and colour in lots of exciting activities based around 100.

 Here is a little clip to show all the fun we had.

Mrs Grant has trialled a new way to add a video.. Fingers crossed it works. If it doesn't then she will try again tomorrow. 

MATARIKI DANCE

We have been learning about the Matariki Stars and how Maori celebrate Matariki.
Matariki is the celebration of the Maori New Year. People celebrate by eating Maori Kai (food)

They also celebrate with dance.

Team 8 made up Maori actions to a Matariki song.

The song was about the seven Matariki stars. Very creative Team 8.

Zoe was so creative and clever at home. She worked with her mum to put together this amazing Matariki piece of art.  Here she is talking about her Art piece.

Genius Time - Day 1

Team 8 2018's FIRST EVER Genius Time started today! Woo-hoo!

It was sooo cool to see everyone working hard to solve problems and being super creative with their designs and resources. Mrs Turner is very proud of the perseverance and patience you showed. 

Mrs Crowhurst and her class from Bucklands Beach Primary did a Google Hangout with us at the end.  It was cool sharing our progress and designs with her class! We can't wait to see how they turn out.

A special THANK YOU to ALL the Mummy's who came in to help us! Mrs Turner definitely couldn't have done it without you!! Hopefully we didn't scare you too much and you'll be back next Thursday!
